Checking the accuracy of a level

Checking the accuracy of a level is easy. When you are purchasing a level or think that your level may have been damaged on the worksite, you can check its integrity with the following simple steps.

To check the horizontal vial:

  1. Place the level on a flat surface.
  2. Make two marks:
    • At the end of the level – End Mark.
    • Along the body of the level in line with
the horizontal vial - Test Point.
  1. Read the vial and remember the bubble’s position.
  2. Turn the level around 180° from end to end and set side of
the level back on the test surface.
Be sure to line up the vial with the Test Point.
  3. Take your second reading.
  4. NOTE:  The bubble in an accurate level will give you the same reading both times. Any difference in the bubble’s position is the degree of inaccuracy in the level.

  5. Repeat the test even if the readings indicated an accurate level.

  3. Read the vial and remember the bubble’s position.
  4. Turn the level from side to side (not end to end) and place it back on the wall.
Be sure to line up the vial with your Test Point.
  5. Take you second reading.
  6. NOTE:  The bubble in an accurate level will give you the same reading both times. Any difference in the bubble’s position is the degree of inaccuracy in the level.

  7. Repeat the test even if the readings indicated an accurate level.
